The innaugural Kitejam event was off to a controversial start. With organisers deciding to postpone the event due to an unseasonable frontal forecast. This raised some criticism at the time- its not often that a wind based event gets postponed because of too much wind! Luckily normal summer conditions were to return and the faithful WA seabreeze made its appearance on the following weekend. With a forecast for early winds, building to 30 plus knots, and a sunny day, the competitors were amped and ready to get into the Jam.
Thirty riders were entered, and at the skippers meeting the riders were drawn randomly from the Jam jar to choose the heats. Local groms, national champions and international pro-riders were all set to hit the water, and show off what kiteboarding is all about.
It was clear early in the day that the level of riding was going to be sky high, all styles of riding were on display, Damo, Simon and Victor throwing some impressive board-off tricks, while new-school tricksters Tom, Mike and the Woodies locals ripped into powered mobes and wakestyle handle pass tricks. The girls were riding amongst the guys and pulling out an impressive array of tricks in the building winds, with powered rolls and blind landings. Simon Walker was one of the few riders to take on the imposing kicker and slider, and Tom, Mike and Dan were racing to stick the first mobe 5 of the day.
As the wind continued to strengthen, techy tricks were becoming increasingly difficult, it was turning into perfect big-air weather, and the competitors were taking to the skies and pushing the altitude to dizzy heights. Dan Anderson was seen pulling lofty double pull-up passes, while others gripped hard on their control bars and started hucking near-horizontal kite-loops. Height and power became the order of the day, with massive hang-time, powered kite-loops and a couple of mistimed crash landings providing the goods for all the cameras and crowds lining the bay. The spectators watched in awe as some of the worlds best riders pushed each other in the great conditions, and KiteJam delivered some of the best freestyle kiteboarding yet seen in Australia.
As the evening approached, the competition came to an end, the beers were opened and the competitors gathered for the voting of their favourite riders. The mood was relaxed, the results would be interesting- although no-one seemed too concerned about them. Everyone was stoked to have been part of the action, and enjoyed the ‘expression session’ style event. It's all about fun, freedom, and pushing the limits in this great new sport.
“I think the Jam is more about taking part, bringing your own interpretation of kiteboarding to the mix, feeding off each others energies, exploring the possibilities and just having a great day at the beach!”
